Details of the recent minimum wage in Nigeria and the recent industrial action by labour congress.
The recent abdorpted minimum in Nigeria is as follows:
Amount: The minimum wage in Nigeria is 70,000 Nigerian naira (NGN) per month, which is about $44.16.
Approval: President Bola Tinubu approved the new minimum wage in July 2024.
Implementation: The new minimum wage has been implemented gradually across states, with some still yet to adopt it.
State contributions: Many states have agreed to pay above the minimum wage, with Lagos and Rivers states offering the highest pay of N85,000.
Review period: The wage will be reviewed every three years.
Background: The minimum wage increase came after months of negotiations between the government and labor unions. The unions argued that rising prices and a weakening currency were making it difficult for workers.
Impact: The minimum wage increase is intended to help with Nigeria's cost of living crisis, which is the worst in a generation. The average monthly cost of living for an individual in Nigeria is 43,200 NGN, while a family's cost of living is over 137,000 NGN.
The Nigeria Labour Congress begins its industrial action as workers in the Federal Capital Territory, Cross River, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Kaduna and Zamfara states down tools today following the failure of the state authorities to implement the payment of the 70,000 naira new minimum wage. Meanwhile, the implementation panels set up by the concerned states have been meeting with labour leaders in a bid to avert the strike action
